Daniel Kondo

Daniel Kondo (born 4 April 1971 in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul) is a Brazilian picturebook author, illustrator, graphic designer, and book-object designer based in Uruguay. His practice combines visual narrative, editorial design, and children’s literature, treating sequence, page turns, typography, rhythm, scale, and material form as active elements of storytelling.

He began his career in graphic design and visual communication before developing an authorial body of picturebooks. His work ranges from wordless and experimental narratives to visual interpretations of Brazilian songs, including collaborations with Gilberto Gil and Djavan. His books include Tchibum!, Psssssssssssssiu!, Sonhozzz, A mancha, Quando Kappa encontra Curupira, Desembarcados, Lobo Mau com dor de dente, Refazenda, Refloresta, and Eletricista.

Kondo won the Jabuti Award for Sonhozzz. His books and editorial projects have also received recognition from the BolognaRagazzi Award, The White Ravens, the BRAW Amazing Bookshelf and Sustainability selections, the Brazilian National Library Foundation, the Brazilian Design Award, Communication Arts, AI-AP American Illustration, the AOI World Illustration Awards, the Society of Illustrators, and the UNESCO Chair in Reading at PUC-Rio.
